What is online blackjack?

The aim of the game is to beat the dealer by getting a hand closest to the score of 21. Go over 21, and you are bust (and lose).

Online blackjack at a live casino brings the fun to your desktop or device whenever you want. Pioneering computer software with beautiful animations and sharp graphics, realistic sound effects, and silky-smooth gameplay comes together for a fantastic playing experience.

Live blackjack goes the extra mile, making the player experience even more realistic with live streaming and professional dealers from a real casino or unique studio.

Blackjack rules are straightforward. The game uses a regular deck or decks of 52 playing cards, and the aim to get as close to 21 with your hand as possible. Face cards are valued at 10, and aces are 1 or 11. All other cards are their face value.

Firstly, you place a bet and are dealt two cards. The dealer meanwhile is dealt one card face up.

Receiving an ace and card worth 10 is called a 'natural' or blackjack, and you win. Blackjack is paid at odds of 3/2.

If you don't have a natural, you choose to either 'hit' – take another card – or 'stand' – stay on your total.

You can keep getting more cards, but you lose if you go over 21. The dealer wins in that case and no more cards are revealed.

If you stick on a number under 21, for example, 15, the dealer plays. They give themselves a second card and then blackjack rules dictate the dealer whether they hit or stand. Normally, they must stand on 17 and hit on 16 or under.

If both hands are not bust, the winning hand is the one closest to 21. If the player wins, they are paid at odds of 1/1 (except blackjack). If the dealer wins, the player loses their stake. In the event of a tie, the player's stake is returned.

How to win at online blackjack

Clever blackjack players playing with an optimal strategy can push the house edge down to around 0.5%, making blackjack by far one of the best casino games to play.

Knowing all the rules is, of course, extremely important. Here’s a few more things to be aware of.

Firstly, splitting pairs is when you are dealt two cards of the same value. You can choose to split them into two new hands and double your stake. You now have two hands.

Doubling down is where you double your bet when your first two cards dealt are worth 9,10 or 11. If you choose to double your stake, you receive just one more card.

Finally, there is insurance. If the dealer's upcard is an ace, players can ‘buy’ insurance to protect against the dealer making blackjack. This is in the form of an additional bet. It pays 2/1 should the dealer indeed get blackjack.

In terms of game choice, single deck blackjack is a good game to play as it's easier to keep track of what cards are left in the deck and so can give you valuable information. Amok Casino has single deck blackjack.

Best strategy for online blackjack

Basic blackjack strategy is quite easy to remember and revolves around what the dealer's upcard is. The three scenarios to remember are as follows:

Aim for at least a total of 18 if you are dealt an ace. An ace and a six, for example, is a good hand at 17, but you should take another card.

When it comes to doubling down, here’s what you need to know. If you have a total of 11, double down. Double down with a total of 10 unless the dealer has a 10-card or an ace. Double down on a total of 9 if the dealer's card is a 2 through to 6.
